KidBiz is a web-based resource that allows students to practice their comprehension of non-fiction articles. There are five steps to the KidBiz routine (slight changes have been made from previous years).
Step 1: Respond to the before-reading poll
*Students should respond with 2-3 complete sentences
Step 2: Read the article
*Reading connections (summarize and generate questions) are
proven-effective reading comprehension strategies
Step 3: Do the activity questions
*Students should refer back to the article
Step 4: Participate in the after-reading poll (optional)
Step 5: Answer the thought question (optional)
The articles are customized to each child’s independent reading level. Students should be striving for 75% or higher on their first try. Research shows that students show the most growth when they are completing at least 2 articles per week. By the end of the 1st quarter, students are expected to complete at least 12 articles with 75% or higher on their first try. They are given time in school to work towards this goal, and should also work on KidBiz independently at home.
