  • Solving word problems involving common fractions
  • Interpreting line plots
    • Common mix up: When asked "What is the greatest amount _______?"  Students often look for the data that has the most dots or Xs on it. This would be the most common quantity, not the greatest amount.  
  • Division
    • Division drills on IXL
      • Level E: J2, E:J4, E:J8 (dividing by 2, 4, & 8) 
    • Relationship between multiplication and division
      • When trying to divide 30 by 5, think...what times 5 would equal 30?  
    • Partial quotient strategy
      • Divide and combine to get total quotient
      • Decompose the dividend into easier chunks that can be divisible by the divisor
Language Arts
  • Grammar: Subject, object and reflexive pronouns
    • Subject pronouns take the place of a noun in the subject of a sentences
    • Object pronouns takes the place of a noun that follows an action verb or preposition
    • Reflexive pronouns renames the subject and ends in-self or -selves
    • Wonders grammar practice available online (student login required)
  • Cause/Effect constructed responses
    • Begin with a topic sentence-include the source, restating the question, answering the question
    • Include evidence from the text and explain the evidence
    • End with a concluding sentence
  • Vocab Strategy: Context Clues
    • Use paragraph clues to figure out meanings of unfamiliar words
Science
  • Kahoot review: plant cells vs animal cells 
    • Congratulations to HonestOctopus, NobleBat and AwesomeOctopus for achieving the top 3 scores for our cells review!
    • Cells test is scheduled for Friday, February 2nd
Misc
  • Human Interaction Presentation-Mr. Mahoney returned to help the students understand the impacts human had when plants and animals were introduced to the islands as well as the adaptations that occurred. The next time we will see Mr. Mahoney will be on our field trip on Friday, March 2nd.

Science

  • Plant cells vs. Animal cells
    • What are the basic differences between an animal cell and a plant cell? 
    • Both types of cells have many similar parts such as a cell membrane, nucleus, mitochondria, vacuole, etc. 
    • Some differences include the plant cell vacuole is bigger, which holds a lot of water. A plant cell as has a cell wall that helps to give it its shape and contains chloroplast, which is like the "kitchen" of the cell.
