- Grammar: Action verbs
- A verb tells what the subject does or is.
- A verb can include more than one word. There may be a main verb and a helping verb.
- Action verbs can have different tenses. They can show action in the past, present, or future.

- To determine the narrator of a story, look for pronouns. Pronouns such as he, she, or they indicate that the story is told by a third-person narrator.
- A third-person narrator is not a character in the story. A third-person narrator may reveal the thoughts and feelings of one, several or all the characters in the story.
- Vocabulary Strategy: Synonyms
- Sometimes the author will use a synonym, another word or phrase that has the same or similar meaning to the unfamiliar word, in a surrounding sentence or paragraph.
- Look for other nearby words and phrases that give examples or provide a further description of the word. Use these clues to try to determine the word's meaning.
