- Comp Skill: Theme
- Theme is the message or lesson an author wants to communicate to the reader.
- To find theme, pay attention to the characters' words and actions.
- Summary
- 1-hand summary strategy-quick, handy reminders for summary writing
- Topic sentence (this book [title] focuses on..)
- Someone... (Who is the main character[s]?)
- Wanted....(What did the character[s] want?
- But then... (What was the problem/conflict?)
- Finally... (What was the resolution to the problem?
- Summaries should be short and does not contain opinions.

- Vocabulary Strategy: Context clues-antonyms
- Sometimes an author will use an antonym for an unfamiliar word.
- Use nearby words and phrases that give examples or provide a further description of the word.
